movement plató/baseplate (bridge side)In this first lesson we will produce watch plató. Plató (or plate, platine, baseplate etc.) is an essential part of watch movement – it is used as a base for all moveable parts. The material for the plató is used, in general, non-ferous and non-magnetic metal alloy: a copper alloy (some kind of yellow brass, silver brass like neusilber/pakfong) or precious metal (gold, silver, platinum) alloy. Now in the modern age some watchmakers or producers are also trying to use an artificial materials. Because we are all amateur watchmakers, we will go back to the roots and we use the standard material – a yellow brass that means “Copper-Zinc-Lead alloy” or “Leaded brass”. I choose a free-cutting brass CuZn36Pb3 (CW603N/C36000) but clock-brass CuZn39Pb2 (CW612N/C37700) is a good choice too.

Prepare your screwdrivers

Old experienced craftsmen say that good and well prepared tools are half of the success at work. This is true even for a screwdrivers – properly sharpened screwdriver with correct shape prevent damage or destruction of head of the screw, possibly parts or material around. Introduction of “ELEVEN” Watch Movement

PM01MR watch movementAs I noticed a few months ago in a description on my YouTube video,
I finally finished my design of watch movement with codename “ELEVEN”. So now a little bit more about: this is a manual wound watch movement, essentially I can say it’s a “regulateur” – it means a movement with separate hour, minute and second hand. Advantage of this concept is relatively simple manufacturing and with a sufficient mechanism precision. This movement is designed and presented primarily because of a learning technology and technological processes in watchmaking, acquisition of skills (or to find delight) in precision mechanics and especially understanding the operation of the watch. It’s not my ambition to manufacture together with you the best and most beautiful watch movement in the world, but with your own personalisation you can make a beatiful machine.

How a watch works

ETA 6497-1If we want to get seriously involved in watchmaking and mainly in a watch movement design, construction and production, the most important thing is to understand the principle of its work. Just like with other things in life, the basis is to know how it works. If we can understand the principle of how things work, we would be able not only to repair any mechanism, but also to design a new or modify an existing one. This applies not only to the watch movement, but generally. If we can perfectly understand how something works we can design a steam engine or a rocket, build a milling machine or a lathe or to identify a failure in a combustion engine. Let’s explain how the watch movement works and get familiar with the terminology – names of individual parts of the mechanism. We will use the terms in the future, so it would be worth to remember them.

Making of dial indexes – first pictures

Dial indexesFor visual dividing of hour segments on the watch dial and thus more readable numerals are used small parts, so-called indices or indexes. They are made in different shapes and came from different materials like steel, gold or brass. Some manufacturers using own specific shapes as a sign of identification for their products. Since I want to produce almost all watch parts myself, I had to solve this hard job too. Potentially you can buy indices as a ready-made product from factory, but finally I decided to manufacture them. For my need I chose a round shaped indices with color filled center. By the way, buying a ready-made indices or simply find a producer or factory seems to be a very big problem, because I could not find anyone worldwide. So, if you do not want to manufacture these parts ourselves, the easiest way is to buy a complete watch dial as a spare part and use indices only.
